Original era manufacture. Pattern of Haversack adopted in 1878, clean stencils on the flap. Brass D-rings on the reverse to allow the haversack to be attached to the removable shoulder strap. Watervliet Arsenal marked interior. Shows honest service use and wear, no holes or tears, repair to the cloth of the left side D-ring. Great original markings, owners initials H.T.S. on the reverse. During the Spanish American War, the 1st Illinois served in Cuba, participating in the brief siege of Santiago.
