US Civil War M1850 Foot Officers Sword, Import, 'Union Forever'

Sold
$595.00

Description

Original era manufacture. Standard Infantry officers sword adopted in 1850 and copied from an existing French pattern sword. The polished steel blade measures 31.5 inches in length, running straight and true. Scattered small areas of surface corrosion along it's length, nothing dreadful. No evidence of sharpening or major nicks in the cutting edge. Etched patriotic panels on both sides of the blade, including the American flag and the motto 'Union For Ever'. No makers markings on the ricasso, likely an import from a European manufacturer. Black leather wrapped grip bound with triple strand wire. Ornate cast brass grip without a US in the guard which is correct for this pattern sword. Pleasing mellow brass patina to the finish. Wrapped around the guard is a very vintage looking gold brocade sword knot. Correct pattern black leather bodied scabbard with brass fittings. I believe that this scabbard while correct for the sword, and fits as it should, is from a different sword as it does not quite line up properly, scabbard throat to the bottom of the guard. Further, the lower suspension loop, while original, has a different patina than the throat or chape. Old electric tape repair above the chape. Still a decent old officers pattern real Civil War sword for the money.
