Description

Here on offer is antique Victorian turned rosewood campaign 'Berry's Patent Crown' traveling inkwell, circa 1860. This campaign travelling inkwell is in excellent condition, with no damage or cracks and the graining and colour of the rosewood is just beautiful. It has a 1.7” square base with a circular and grooved lid, that is impressed with a crown and the words 'PATENT INK'. I believe this actually related to Berry's Patent Crown who made a number of inkwells including campaign examples, in different shapes and sizes, some in turned rosewood others of brass covered in leather. I believe the patent actually refers to the spring underneath the glass bottle, which pushes it up to make a watertight fit with the rubber stopper held inside the top of the lid. On this fine example, the lid is removed by gently pressing down and twisting it, in either direction, until it clears the three carved lugs on the inner edge that locate into corresponding grooves carved out inside the lid. Once removed you can see the neck of the glass bottle that is retained by a by a brass collar. The bottle is in excellent condition with just some old blue ink staining. Typically, this type of inkwell was fitted in campaign writing slopes, that were made with specific square compartments to hold them, however, they could also be carried and used independently. The base measures 1.7” (4.3cm) square by 1.7” (4.3cm) high including the lid and weighs 70g. Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
