Antique Victorian Turned and Painted Wooden City of London Police Truncheon

Available
£95.00

Description

Here on offer is an antique Victorian City of London turned and painted wooden police truncheon. It has an impressive ring turned grip and the lower section has been painted black with a painted oval image of the flag of the City of London. This is based on the flag of England, having a centred red St George's Cross on a white background, with the red sword in the top left quarter. The sword is believed to represent the sword that beheaded Saint Paul, who is the patron saint of the city. The flag image has lost all the white background paint but a lot of the red paint remains. It also has various light scratches and chips to the finish, but is a genuine period piece. It still retains a thin brown silk strap around the top of the grip, which was most likely used for hanging it on a wall. It measures 18.25” (46.3cm) long, by 1.5” (3.8cm) diameter at the wide end. It weighs a heavy 285g. Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
