Description

Here on offer is a fine example of a 1950's period Deflection Magnetometer by the famous English laboratory instrument maker: W & J George & Becker Ltd Founded from a take over of F.E. Becker & Co. by W.J. George Ltd in 1897, they continued to trade under the original name until the 1950s when W. & J. George & Becker Ltd was adopted. The company was succeeded by Griffin & George, when W. & J. George & Becker Ltd merged with Griffin & Tatlock in 1954. A Deflection Magnetometer is an instrument used to measure the magnetic moment and polar strength of a bar magnet. It is also used to compare the pole strengths of two bar magnets. It consists of a compass box in which a small magnetic needle is pivoted on a frictional less point so as to rotate freely in the horizontal plane. A long Aluminium pointer is attached perpendicular to the needle at its centre This example is in excellent/near mint condition with no damage to its black Bakelite housing and it is still in perfect working order. The glass is in perfect unscratched condition and there is just the slightest rubbing to the black finish on the edge of the top metal compass rim. The only example of this make of compass I could find was in the Science Museum and they seem to rarely come up for sale on the open market. It measures 5.5” (14cm) diameter at the base by 2” (5cm) high. It weighs 200g. Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description. Please see my TERMS OF BUSINESS regarding Deliver Charges and Insurance regarding additional insurance cover, should you require it, BEFORE the item is dispatched.
