WW2 Japanese Army Officers Shin Guntō Sword

Sold
A$2500.00

Description

A good example of a veteran bring back sword. The blade with only areas of light pitting and tone otherwise remains rihght and with a slight visible hamon line. A white metal civilian style habaki. The tang with one retaining hole , overall pitting and is unsigned. The original grip with Showa period Army Shin Gunto wrapping and brass fittings including chrysanthemum menuki. The tuba is an older pre Showa period Samurai non voided cast iron one. There remains the small leather and press stud scabbard retaining strap. The scabbard is a field used leather covered wooden example with single hanger ring. The sword fits perfectly into the scabbard and attaches to the press stud strap perfectly. There is overall light wear and scuffing to the brown leather and the stitching remains intact. Im no expert on these swords but Im thinking that this blade is older than Showa period and was a converted civilian sword to military use with the 'new style' 1930's army hilt fittings. Overall a very nice sword. Licence required in Victoria.
