18th / 19th Century Tintype of Richard Lionheart Great Seal.

During the 18th and early 19th century, before stamp collecting it would be a gentleman's hobby to visit various towns, museums and castles and take impressions of their great seals, either using shellac or wax, the wax would then be taken to make a mould for a tintype, brass or bronze impression. So here we have a Georgian period impression of the seal of king Richard the Lionheart 1157 – 1199. It has also been covered in a red wax, so it looks like the original. It comes in a fairly modern mount and in very good condition. A very historical piece which is a piece of history itself. It measures 6 inches in diameter.
