Original era manufacture. Experimental Shovel and picket pin combination tool, the picket pin/hammer handle  served as a removable handle for a number of different tool heads, shovel, pick or hatchet. It could also be used as a hammer for removing or tightening horseshoe nails.This example comes with the shovel attachment, which can be temporarily attached to the picket pin by a removable cotter pin and chain. A good bit of the black paint remains and the shovel blade displays what may be a unit marking, 17 1 ( or I) 72.
