French M1866 Chassepot Bayonet, St.Etienne Arsenal, Modified Scabbard

Sold
$150.00

Description

Original period manufacture. Standard bayonet for the 1866 Chassepot rifle, brass grip, and 22 inch steel blade. Marked on the spine St.Etienne and what appears to be an 1870 date. Darkened steel finish to the blade with scabbard spots of cleaned surface corrosion, dark steel patina finish to the hooked guard. Well fitting dark steel patina finish on the scabbard with some shallow denting near the tip. The frog loop has been removed, and a brass panel with a bottom edge protrusion has been soldered in it's place. First one I can ever remember modified like this. Non-matching numbers.
