By trade a 'Cloth Lapper', John enlisted for the British Army at, Glasgow, on, 13 July 1839, on which date he was posted to the 26th (The Cameronian) Regiment of Foot, in which regiment he was allocated the regimental number 1392. While serving with the 26th Foot, John served in China during the 1st Opium War, for which he was awarded the respective campaign medal. John transferred to the 28th Regiment of Foot on 1 March 1852, and subsequently saw active service in the Crimean War, being awarded the Crimea Medal with clasp 'Sebastopol', and entitlement to a Turkish Crimea Medal. John remained with the 28th Foot through to taking his final discharge from the British Army, on, 21 August 1860.
