A good original wartime issue British Red Cross & Order of St John 'CENTRAL HOSPITAL SUPPLY SERVICE badge'; silver plated enamel shield depicting the emblems of the joint war organisation, with additional initials 'C.H.S.S.'; the reverse inpressed with maker's details 'J.R.Gaunt London'. Good condition, complete with original pin fittings, slight evidence of service wear but no stress or damage to the enamel, a good example.Circa 22mm tall.Worn during the Second World War by members working to produce essential medical supplies at the hospital supply depots. Founded in 1939. Its members, who ranged from tiny working parties in remote rural districts to large groups in the big towns, they supplied most of the hospital clothing not only for the three fighting services but also for the civilian casualties of WW2.K67.4
