Description

Large pattern silver plated button, fixed shank, maker marked Jennens & Co, London, circa 25mm in diameter. Victorian crown with a central bugle with the No 48 between the stings. The garter strap as the designation 1st Bat Shropshire Rifles Volunteers. Some light tarnishing and some wear to silver plate on the high points of the button. Scarce. The No 48 was the precedence number of the County of Shropshire, indicating the order in which the Secretary of State for War accepted each counties offer of volunteer corps. B54.1
