Description
This is a very rare and desirable north Vietnamese army, pocket sized, military police officers diary from 1969 along with his Sun Helmet Military Police Badge. It appears to have been given to the NVA police officer on January 19, 1969. In the Nam Bo, which is how the North Vietnamese referred to Southern warfront, the Cong An were tasked with enforcing military criminal regulations, such as desertion and being AWOL; providing justice to those in liberated zones; guarding captured POWs of the South Vietnamese army and the US military; and enforcing good order and discipline in the ranks of the north Vietnamese army. Their duties parallel those of a typical US or ARVN MP. The Cong An also operated along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and Cambodia. They also operated in rear base areas in Laos and Cambodia. Just like in western militaries, the North Vietnamese Army police operated everywhere. The VC had parallel military police but their badges were dissimilar. This guy was an NVA Regular from the North. This is a combination rulebook and diary. The front half of the book contains scores of pages of printed material. This printed material appears to be information relevant to what a Cong An officer in the North Vietnamese army was supposed to know. The back half of the book contains a daily calendar with scores of entries for the year 1969 up to the last day of 1969. Based on the completeness of this diary it was likely captured in 1970. Many of the entries contain numbers with the letter D, the DRV currency called Dong, next to it. We believe these are perhaps fines, levied by this police officer to individual NVA soldiers. As you can see, the cover is made of a red vinyl material and is embossed Army and Police & the year 1969. The diary is about 4 3/4 inches by 3 inches, perfect for an NVA uniform chest pocket. Also included is a rare, wartime, North Vietnamese Army police officer's badge for the Cong An. This badge would have been worn on the front of his and helmet. It is embossed with CA for Cong An. We have only been able to offer a handful of North Vietnamese and VC diaries over the years. All of them belonged to ordinary soldiers and officers. This is the first time we've ever heard of or seen a North Vietnamese Army police diary. This type of document was supposed to have been turned in for intelligence exploitation. Perhaps this one was and then went out the back door after the information contained in the document was exploited, if at all. Nevertheless, we're happy to have the ability offer this fine diary at this time. Do not let it get away if you collect North Vietnamese personal effects or military police items.
