ChiCom North Vietnamese Army Type 53 Mortar Machinegun Padded Pack 1966

Heavy padding make it easier to carry heavy equipment such as the baseplate to the 82mm mortar. This is made in 1966. The photo from a Chinese PLA Poster shows how it remains partially buckled to the baseplate as if it were hastily set up for a fire mission. Imagine humping an 82mm mortar base plate down the Ho Chi Minh Trail without one.
