Description

A scarce original circa 1930's period 'SS Montrose souvenir brooch' this extremely attractive steamship displayed in hand painted enamels, set within an ornate gilt surround. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no damage to the enamel Width approx 31mm. 'S.S.Montrose' was built by Fairfield Co, Glasgow for Canadian Pacific SS Co, she started her maiden voyage on 5th May 1922 from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal. In the Second World War she was then converted to the Armed Merchant Cruiser and became 'HMS Forfar'. On the 2nd December 1940 she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U.99 off the West coast of Ireland with the loss of 172 lives.
