Description

A rare original post 1940 Second World War period English made 'Free French Air Force official pilot's wing badge'; full size gilt brass example bearing the 'Cross of Lorraine' within a red, white and blue shield mounted with star and bearing a V shaped title below 'FAFL' (Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres); the reverse impressed with official issue number '4768'. Good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no enamel loss, dark underglaze mark to red enamel part of the shield. Wingspan 63mm. Height 30mm. The Free French Air Forces (Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres, FAFL) were the air arm of the Free French Forces during the Second World War from 1940. They officially ceased to hold this title from 1943, with the merger of Free French Forces with General Giraud's anti-German forces, but were still commonly known by the title until the liberation of France in 1944, when they became the regular French Air Army.
