RAF No 250 Fighter Squadron Royal Air Force Badge c1940s

A rare original period 'No 250 Sudan Fighter Squadron Royal Air Force' gilt and enamel badge depicting a 'Hawk' with motto 'Close To The Sun', the reverse with Continental style pin possibly Italian. Very good condition, no damage to the enamel. Height 40mm. RAF No 250 Sudan Fighter Squadron provided support to the 8th Army up to and during the stratigic Battle of El Alamein; it then proceeded through both Egypt and Libya until the end of campaign in North African. After July 1943, the squadron operated out of Malta against targets in Sicily prior to the invasion and then moved to Sicily to engage hostile Italian targets. September saw the Squadron moved again, this time to the Italian mainland itself. Disbanded at Treviso 2nd January 1947.
