Description

A scarce original Boer War period 'Absent-Minded Beggar Fund' silver plated butter knife, depicting the defiant figure of 'A Gentleman in Kharki' Boer War on plinth, the shank and knife with floral decoration with maker's details to reverse 'THBS' (Thomas Henry Blake, Sheffield). Very good condition, toned. Height 188mm. The 'Absent-Minded Beggar' was a poem by 'Rudyard Kipling' written in 1899 as part of an appeal by the Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers fighting in the South African War. Richard Caton Woodville provided an illustration, titled 'A Gentleman in Kharki' showing a wounded but defiant British soldier, numbers of the poem, sheet music were published and large quantities of related merchandise were sold to aid the charity the 'Absent-Minded Beggar Fund'
