Description

A scarce original King George VI period 'No 101 Bomber Squadron Royal Air Force' gilt and enamel badge, depicting a demi-lion rampant guardant and Latin motto 'Mens Agitat Molem' (Mind over matter), the reverse with maker's details 'H.W.Miller Ltd Branston St B'Ham.18'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, enamel perfect, gilt finish remains bright. Height 33mm. During the Second World War No 101 Squadron Avro Lancasters were equipped with a top secret radio jamming system codenamed 'Airborne Cigar' 'Special Operators' located and jammed German fighter controllers broadcasts, to spread disinformation, deliberately breaking the standing operating procedure of radio silence made the aircraft highly vulnerable to being tracked and attacked, which resulted in 101 Squadron having the highest casualty rate of all RAF squadrons.
