A scarce original Great War period 'Hartlepools Hospitals Bombardment Durham RGA tribute medal' large circular gilded brass example within laurel sprays, surmounted by a fuse with double scrolls 'Ye did it to mine' Ye did it to me'. Durham Royal Garrison Artillery badge superimposed on Red Cross on white background and flanked by '1915' '1916' all enclosed by blue enamel title circlet inscribed 'Thankoffering To The Hartlepools Hospitals' 'In Memory of Dec 16th 1914'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, enamel intact, gilt finish remains bright. An excellent example. Height 44mm. In order to raise funds for the Hartlepools Hospitals who had been hard pushed during the bombardment, the Borough issued what have commonly been called the 'Bombardment Medal'. Several types were produced and they were given to all those people who contributed to a collection made in Hartlepool in 1915. See: The Volunteer Artillery by Litchfield & Westlake.
