Description

A scarce original circa 1920's period memorial badge in the form of a pressed brass disc, showing the bow section of the ship in relief and inscribed 'VINDICTIVE DAY 10th MAY 1918'. Very good condition, complete with single stick pin fitting. Diameter 26mm. HMS Vindictive was a British Arrogant-class cruiser ship built at Chatham Dockyard. She was launched on 9 December 1897 and completed in 1899. The vessel participated in the Zeebrugge Raid and was sunk as a blockship during the Ostend Raid on 10th May 1918, for which her Captain Alfred Carpenter was awarded a Victoria Cross. In 1920 the wreck was raised and scrapped the the bow section preserved as a memorial in Ostend harbour.
