Description

A scarce original early Elizabeth II period 'Royal Air Force No 543 Squadron gilt and enamel badge', depicting a Crane's head carrying an open padlock with key in its beak and motto 'Valiant and Vigilant', the reverse impressed with maker's details 'H.W.Miller Ltd B'Ham.18'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, enamel perfect, gilt finish remains bright. Height 34mm. 'Royal Air Force No 543 Squadron' was formed during the war at 'RAF Benson' in 1942 as a photographic reconnaissance unit with the Supermarine Spitfire. It was reformed again at RAF Gaydon in 1955 and was disbanded at RAF Wyton in 1974.
