Description

A scarce original early 20th century political medal for the 'Union & Tariff Reform Women's Association' organisation medal; red white and blue enamelled gilded metal example in the form of an eight pointed star with 'Union Flag' to the centre enclosed on all four sides by the titles 'Australia' 'New Zealand' 'South Africa' and 'Canada'; to lower point 'India'; the star with additional scroll to the top 'Womens Association' and below 'Union & Tariff Reform'; the reverse with early maker's details 'W.O.Lewis Howard St. Birmm.'. Very good condition, complete with original silk ribbon and pin fittings, no stress marks or damage to the enamel. Height approx 78mm. The 'Union & Tariff Reform Women's Association' was a sub-group of the 'Tariff Reform League' which was formed in 1903 to protect Britain against foreign imports, industry from unfair competition and to improve trade with the countries of the British Empire.
