Description

A rare original turn of the 20th century 'Donald Steamship Company' cap badge, small pattern gilded metal laurel wreath, the centre with applied house flag of the company, a red enamel 'Celtic cross' on white ground with blue border, the reverse impressed with maker's details 'J.R.Gaunt London', pin shank and hook fitting, unusual and possibly a replacement for twin blades, but of the period. Very good condition, enamel perfect, gilt remains bright. Height 35mm. Width 43mm. 'John Addie Donald' born at Kirkintilloch, Glasgow, Scotland, moved to the United States in 1884. In 1902 he formed and became president of the 'Donald Steamship Co.', New York. In 1917 he become a member of the U. S. Shipping Board and with a feeling of patriotism for the country of his adoption relinquished business connection in order to devote himself to the responsible task as member of the Shipping Board.
