US Civil War Artillery Pattern Enlisted Boots, Thomas C. Else, Philadelphia Retailer

Original period manufacture. An unused pair of Civil War pattern enlisted Artillery boots in a small size. Heel to toe they measure about 9.5 inches, across the widest part of the sole 3.5 inches, and judging by the very clear maker/retailer name on the soles of each, they have never been worn. From the bottom of the heel to the top of the back of the boot shaft they measure 12 inches, from the bottom of the sole to the top of the front of the boot, 14 inches. The pulls are of leather, with one missing. Thomas C. Else shows up in the 1861 Philadelphia City Directory as a Salesman, and in the 1866 Directory, as a Merchant. He was born in 1819 and died in 1901. He is not listed in the Directory of American Military Goods Dealers & Makers 1785-1885, by Bazelon & McGuinn. The boots are in very sound condition, the tops remain pliable and stand up straight, small bit of dryness to the top edge of the boot opening.
