QSA 1899-1902 With Clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State & Transvaal, K.S.A 1901-1902 With Clasps for South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902, 1914 Mons star trio & the recipients original silver war badge To- 7122.PTE.R.BELL.A&S.HIGHRS (QSA/KSA) & 7153.PTE/CPL.R.BELL.1/R.SC.FUS Roderick Bell was born in Thornaby & served with the 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in South Africa during the Boer war. By the outbreak of WW1 he was on the reserve but was re-called and landed in France 1-11-1914. He was serving with the 1st battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers when he arrived overseas but transferred to the 12th battalion for service in both Egypt & Palestine. He received both gun shot & shrapnel wounds in France 28-4-17 & gun shot wounds to his left arm & left leg in France 31-10-1918 just 11 days before the armistice.
