Description

During the short period Ernst Rohm was in charge of the millions of SA men in 1933/34, he authorised his now famous Rohm dedicated dagger. His signature and 'In cordial friendship' were etched to the reverse of 1000's of daggers he presented to his loyal followers. Due to the vast number of daggers required many manufacturers were given the contracts to supply them. Anton Wingen being one of them. After Hitler had him murdered in the 'night of the long knives' on 1st July 1934, all traces of him were ordered to be removed or destroyed. Subsequently these daggers were either hidden away or physically altered to remove his name etc. This is a perfect example of an erased signature which has been done quite well, but by the owner, not the factory! The original owner has also subsequently joined the NSKK and the scabbard has been painted black over the brown SA finish. The dagger is in very nice condition. Good clean nickel fittings. Lower crossguard stamped with Gau He mark. A dark brown hardwood grip with nickel eagle and perfect enamel SA button. Blade is in very nice order with bright surface and good colour to the lettering. Reverse has the Anton Wingen trademark of a standing knight. The Rohm removal process has taken off the top part of the trademark. The remaining part of the blade shows light but carefully done grinding over the surface to remove the dedication completely.
