Description

New Zealand Medal 1869, reverse dated 1864 to 1866, to orderly Room Clerk and Colour Sergeant John Rushworth, 68th Light Infantry. Correctly impressed: 3160. O.R.C. Cr. SERGT. JOHN RUSHWORTH. 68TH. LT. INFTY. John Rushworth was born in 1833 at Leeds and was a railway clerk upon his joining the 69th Light Infantry on 20 November 1853. He joined the Depot at Newry, Ireland but was in hospital from 4-30 January 1854. Recovered, he was embarked for Turkey to join the Service Company in July 1854. Rushworth arrived just after the Battle of Alma and was almost immediately attached to the pay of Scutari Hospital, on 22 September 1854. Thereafter he remained at the hospital and did not qualify for the Crimea Medal. He would see active service in New Zealand, being present for the Tauranga campaign, at the rank of Orderly Room Clerk and Colour Sergeant, being discharged in January 1875.
