Extremely Historical Japanese i-58 Sub Grouping with More-Here is your opportunity to own a documented piece of history! This grouping is documented in volume 4 of my 4 volume book series titled “The Stories Behind the Treasures, The Making of a Collectorholic”. It is a group of items that were taken home by navy veteran Peter A. Koegel of St Paul, Minnesota. He was an electrician mate who was assigned to the submarine tender USS Nereus. He took part in Operation Road's End, with the Nereus holding the distinction of towing the Japanese submarine i-58 out of Sasebo Bay to an area off the Goto Islands to be scuttled. On the day before she was scuttled, March 31, 1946. He removed this telephone from the conning tower of the sub. Why did he decide to grab something from this exact sub you ask? It is because this was the ship that was responsible for the sinking of the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis. At 23:00 on 29 July 1945 i-58 surfaced 250 miles north of Palau and headed south. Shortly afterwards the navigation officer Lt. Tanaka spotted a ship approaching from the east, making 12 knots (22 km/h; 14 mph) and not zigzagging. Lt. Cdr. Hashimoto incorrectly identified the target as an 'Idaho-class battleship [sic]'. She was in fact the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis, and had sailed from Guam for Leyte the previous day, after having delivered parts and nuclear material for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs to Tinian from San Francisco. So he decided that a souvenir from this infamous sub would be something cool to have. The phone is in outstanding condition with its original microphone, data plate remaining intact. There is a photo of the sub in Saseco Bay that is included. But Peter wasn't done. He also took a large range finder disc and a data plate (perhaps from a fire extinguisher?) from the harbor station base at Sasebo. We have included a rifle bag that belonged to Koegel which has his name and info stenciled onto it. Also, a HUGE personnel file which is chuck full of all kinds of information related to Peter Andrew Koegel, who was honorably discharged from the navy in June of 1946. As mentioned, all of these items are featured in volume 4 of my book series, on pages 1399-1401. A long time part of my personal collection, now a once in a lifetime opportunity for you!
