Description

Original era manufacture. A professionally framed United Daughters of the Confederacy membership document and badge, presented to a woman as a member of the Monroe Chapter, North Carolina UDC. Ancestry research provides the following information, as she was the second wife of Robert V. Houston, who was a soldier in 10th Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery. Robert joined the army in February 1864 when only 15 years of age, his battalion saw active combat during the battle of Bentonville, March 19-21 1865. During this battle the 10th NC HA, was deployed as Infantry. An entry on 'Find A Grave' provides interesting details of his life, including his photo in later years and tombstone. Part of the write up follows; '...In later years he (R.V. Houston) with the Confederate Veterans local camp, 'Camp Walkup', even serving as its Commander for some years. He was always ready to go down in his pocket for funds help needy old soldiers or to send them to reunions. He was buried in a uniform of Confederate gray'. Eleven pages of the Ancestry files are included with the document and badge.
