Description
Original era manufacture. Scarce, early pattern removable belt support system for the cavalry saber. It's design is attributed to J.E.B. Stuart, who gained immortal fame as the commander of the Confederate cavalry during the Civil War. Sheet brass hook with an internal lock mechanism which prevents the hook from slipping out of a cavalry saddle equipment loop. There are two leather carrying straps attached to the bottom of the hook, the longest of which is US Ordnance Department marked. On the rear of the locking bar is stamped FRANKFORD ARSENAL, and on the rear of the hook, the letters U.S. in old English script. Overall very sound for its 150 year plus age; the leather remains pliable and a good deal of the original finish remains on the brass.
