US Spanish American War 8th Ohio Inf Identified Cartridge Belt, Hurlburt Mfg

Original period manufacture. Light tan colored woven canvas belt with loops for 50, 45-70 rifle cartridges, made by Hurlburt Brothers of New York City.The Hurlburt belts are known for their good quality, and the unique triple line of dark blue stitching which passes through the loops and body of the belt.This example has a C-Buckle type closure, and is identified as to the original owner on the inside of the belt, one G.W. Brown of Co. D. 8th OVI number 17.During the Spanish-American War, the 8th Ohio served in Cuba and witnessed the bombardment and surrender of Santiago. They were known as 'McKinley's Own' and suffered the loss of 15 of their number during the campaign. Private George W. Brown served in company D. Unusual to find an identified belt to a soldier who actually went to Cuba during the war.
