A rare original 'Boer War Tribute Medal inscribed 'CORPORAL W.THOMAS FROM THE OFFICERS 1901' (7017 Corporal William THOMAS (Widnes), bearing 9 carat gold Birmingham hallmarks for 1901 maker's details 'CE&FDLd' (Constantine & Floyd). Very good condition. Height approx 45mm.Private William Thomas of St.Helens Lancashire volunteered for service with the South Lancashire Regiment in January 1900 having previously served with the 2nd Volunteer Battalion. He embarked for South Africa on the 2nd February 1900, serving with the 1st Volunteer Company, attached to the 1st Bn of the regiment. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with two clasps 'Orange Free State' and 'Lang's Nek'. He returned to the UK and was discharged on the termination of his employment on the 1st November 1900.Illustrated in Boer War Tribute Medals by M. G. Hibbard.
