GVR 1st type Distinguished Service Medal & GVR 2nd type Royal Fleet reserve long service medalTo- 202285.W.WADE.PO.ATLANTIC.OCEAN.11.SEPT.1917 (on the DSM)& 202286.(PO.A.7145)W.J.WADE.PO.R.F.R (RFR)William John Wade was born in Paddington, London 14-7-1883. He enlisted in to the Royal Navy as a boy in 1898 & during WW1 he served onboard HMS Excellent & HMS St. Vincent. Along with a number of periods of service attached to serve on armed merchant vessels. He was awarded the DSM in the London gazette 22-12-1918 & the recommendation for the award states,SS.British transporter. HM Government ramming of German Submarine U49.11th September 1917. Guns Crew. The ships gunners by cool & accurate shooting forced the submarine to drop astern and out of range. Thirty four rounds were fired none of which hit the submarine. After ramming the submarine two further rounds were fired & its believed that both of these struck her.
