Description
Deutsch ist Die Saar 1934 Tinnie-One of the more commonly encountered but attractive tinnies that were intended to rouse patriotism, proclaiming the German-ness of the Saarland. This area had been under the control of the League of Nations for a period of 15 years from 1920, and its coalfields administered by France. This tinnie was a rallying piece to encourage solidarity; the image shows shaking hands, with one hand on the left next to the inscription 'German' and the hand on the other side, a chain hanging from the wrist beside the name 'Saar'. A very symbolic piece! The next year, 1935, Saarlanders voted to return to the Reich in a referendum vote – with over 90% of the population voting in favor, it was then changed to Westmark. Handsome example with a beautiful bronze finish and working pin.
