French M1874 Gras Rifle Bayonet, Modified, Gewehr 88

Original era manufacture. Standard pattern French M1874 Gras bayonet, which has been modified to fit the German 88 Commission Rifle.All of the French arsenal markings have been removed from the blade spine, and the brass pommel has been filed down to remove the original chamfered edges on the bar attachment groove. Further, a small steel extension has been inserted next to the press catch, to lengthen the distance between the catch and muzzle ring.See page 232, Volume III, German Bayonets by Anthony Carter for a complete description of this process.The bayonet is quite clean, exhibiting light age and wear, with a clean, blue finished scabbard.
