Description
As early SS daggers go, this one nearly has it all! As it has an erased Rohm blade, this was made 1933-1934. These were carried by both officers and men until the 1936 Chained version was introduced just for officers. All nickel fittings which have not been cleaned. One side has quite a yellow patina, the other side is brighter, so I think one side was exposed to the elements longer than the other. Perhaps hung on a wall for years? Black ebony grip is near perfect, no cracks or damage apart from a TINY chip in one lower corner. Solid nickel grip eagle and nice SS enamel button. The lower crossguard is stamped with the Roman numeral III. IN ADDITION engraved along the back of the crossguard the original owner has scratched the letters 'SS'. Further along the crossguard the original owners SS NSDAP number has been professionally engraved '26258'. I have checked this in the Deinststalle listing but it's not there. However, I contacted the American researcher Ross Kelbaugh as he has direct access to the wartime records kept on the Library of Congress. He has indicated that records DO exist for this SS member and he says, '26 258 can be identified to a low level officer. He has a SS Officer File and a Race & Settlement File in the Archives.'So at some stage we will know his name and some history on the original owner.Scabbard has nickel fittings and a good black anodised finish but no lacquer to the surface. The lower ball has been dropped and is a little squashed. The blade is in remarkable condition with crossgrain visible and good dark lettering. The reverse side of the blade has had the Rohm inscription professionally removed and has been expertly re-polished. They have caught the makers mark in the process, but enough remains to see it's a Gottleib Hammesfar with the distinctive pyramid trademark. Quite a historical dagger with more research to come at some stage.
