Description

A superb example of an early 19th century round headed Fijian ula. The 'ula' is a throwing club made from ironwood rootball. It was carried on the waist, often in multiples, and was used as a fairly close range missile.Fijian clubs were family heirlooms which had great Mana or spiritual energy in them that was passed down to warriors from their ancestors. Each club was unique in their decoration. The piece has a beautiful rich patina with the handle having a decorative and functional carved 'tava tava' design. This helped the warrior to grip the club firmly when swinging or throwing the weapon. The ula measures 15' long and has a head diameter of 8cm.Excellent condition.
