GVR WW1 1st type Military Cross (MC), GVR 1st type WW1 Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM), 1914 Star trio with original August to November 1914 Clasp & GVIR 1st type Special Constabulary faithful service medal To- 9497.SJT.J.MITCHELL.8/R.HIGHRS (DCM)9497.PTE.J.MITCHELL.R.HIGHRS (1914 star)& 9497.WO.CL.1,J.MITCHELL.R.HIGHRS (Pair)John Mitchell first landed in France serving with the 1st battalion 13-8-1914 & was wounded 11-10-1914. He was evacuated back to the UK due t his wounds & returned to France 10-5-1915 as a SJT with the 8th service battalion of the regiment. He was awarded the DCM for his services at Longueval on the Somme in the London gazette 13-2-1917 with the following citation.'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He greatly assisted in leading his company to their objective. later, he displayed great courage and initiative during any enemy counter-attack.He went on to become the Regimental Serjeant Major of the 8th battalion & was awarded the Military Cross (MC) in the London gazette 23-4-1918 with the following citation.For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the battalion on the left was held up by heavy machine-gun fire from a strong enemy 'pill-box', which held about 100 of the enemy, he made a most determined attempt to capture it with a small party. He only desisted in the attempt when all the party had become casualtiesHe was wounded in the March offensive of 1918 & again returned to the UK.He became a very active member of his local branch of the old contemptibles association & passed away in 1976 age 90NEF & Complete with extensive research that includes a copy image of the recipient as a member of the Camborne branch of the old contemptibles association whilst his medals. Along with MIC details, Medal roll details, battalion war diary details, London gazette details & other biographical research.The reverse of the MC is unnamed as issued & the August to November clasp is confirmed on the recipients M.I.C. He was presented his MC by the king at Buckingham palace in 1917 & went on to settle in Cornwall whilst working as a butler.
