Dutch POW Wooden Box 'Neubrandenburg'

Hand made souvernir wooden tobacco box of a Dutch Prisoner of War who was held in captivity in POW Camp 'Neubrandenburg', also known as 'Oflag 67'. Between 1942 and early 1944 the camp in Stanislau housed about 2000 Dutch officers who were taken as prisoner of war. When the Russians came closer to 'Stalag 371' (Stanislau) it was decided to transfer the prisoners to POW Camp 'Neubrandenburg'. Stanislau was completely evacuated between 10 and 12 January 1944. The 2000 prisoners were divided over three cattle wagons and transferred to Neubrandenburg. The wooden box belonged to 1st Lieutenant 'H. Heimel' (Johannes), service-number 31080, he was first held in captivity in Room 249 in 'M-Stammlager 317' (Stanislau), and afterwards in Room 5, Barrack 9A, Oflag 67 - Neubrandenburg. His signature and those of other Dutch Prisoners of War are engraved on the wooden box, see photos. The wooden box is sized approximately 10,5 x 9 x 2 cms.
