Description

Original era manufacture. Another piece of headgear which didn't make the cut during the war-room remodel.Rigid bodied kepi/shako covered in painted silk, with a gold stenciled 27 at the front. Bound edge, black leather visor is securely sewn to the body, red Moroccan leather sweatband, with a white net side covering, and a black painted silk crown disc, with a gilt Paris makers name and logo.At the front is a poodle-tail shaped pom-pom in red and blue wool, with a brass number 2, and wire mounting prong.The shako is sound, not crushed or broken, but does show some separation in the covering at the back.     During the Franco-Prussian War, the 27th regiment formed part of the 3rd Division, and was commanded by Colonel de Barolet. It fought in the battle of Beaumont on 30 August 1870, and served during the siege of Bitche.
