Description

A rare original circa 1911 to 1912 period 'Royal Yacht Medina P&O shipping line pin badge'; light blue gilt and enamel ships wheel, the centre mounted with the Red Ensign and the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company cross flags. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no enamel loss, gilt finish remains bright.Diameter approx 27mm.The P & O ship Medina was launched on 14 March 1911, but before entering commercial service she was requisitioned for use as the Royal Yacht for HM King George V and Queen Mary for their state visit to India. On arrival back in the UK on 5 February 1912, the ship was transferred back to P&O and her maiden voyage to Australia commenced on 28 June 1912. On the 28 April 1917, when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB 31.
