A few letters **** in 'Highlanders now wornMedal & Clasp Verification: Corporal Hugh McCall of the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Highlanders) Regiment of Foot is confirmed entitled to the below following campaign medals per the respective referenced medal rolls and source:- Crimea Medal with clasp 'Sebastopol': WO 100/31- Indian Mutiny Medal with clasp 'Central India': WO 100/38. Present at Siege of Kotah & Pertabghur- Turkish Crimea Medal: WO97 file series recipients extant service papers referHugh McCall was a native of Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland, where he was born circa. Described as being 19 years of age and by 'Trade' a 'Labourer', Hugh enlisted in the British Army for a bounty of 4 pounds & 7 shillings, and attested for service into the British Army at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on 20 May 1843, on which date he was posted to the 42nd Highlanders (Royal Highlander 'Black Watch'). Hugh later transferred to the 72nd Highlanders on, 1 March 1852. In total Hugh McCall served 16 years with the British Army. At the time he took his final discharge at Mhow, British India, on 12 April 1860, he held the rank of Corporal and had served a total of 16 years & 330 days towards his reckonable pension (he then served a further 200 days making for 17 years & 165 days reckonable service). His military conduct and character being was described as having been 'Very Good'. Most of Hugh's service career had been spent on overseas foreign service totaling 11 years 1 month including taking part in two foreign wars. His overseas deployments in order were:- Malta: 2 years 4 months- Bermuda: 4 years 3 months- North America: 4 months- Malta: 5 months- Crimea: 1 year 1 month- East Indies: 2 years 8 monthsAt final discharge Hugh McCall indicated that he intended to return to his native county of Ayrshire, Scotland, as his place of future residency.Condition: About VF
