Naming is regimentally engraved in a contemporary script style known for this particular regimentMedal & Clasp Verification: Private John McCall of the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Highlanders) Regiment of Foot is confirmed entitled to the below following campaign medals per the respective referenced medal rolls and source:- Crimea Medal with clasp 'Sebastopol': WO 100/31- Turkish Crimea Medal: WO97 file series the recipients extant service papers referJohn McLeod was a native of Lochinver, Sutherland, Scotland, where he was born circa 1832. Described as being 19 years & 1 month of age, and by 'Trade' a 'Labourer', John enlisted in the British Army at Wick, Caithness, Scotland on, 8 July 1851, on which date he was posted to the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Highlanders) Regiment of Foot. In total John McLeod served 16 years & 37 days with the British Army. John took his final discharge from the British Army in the United Kingdom on, 13 August 1867. At discharge he indicated that his future place of residence, was to be Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. Albeit his name was five times entered in the 'Defaulters Book', he was never tried by court martial, and his military conduct and character were described as having been 'Very Good'. Most of Hugh's service career had been spent on overseas foreign service totalling 11 years 2 month including taking part in the Crimean War for which he was recorded to be holding the Crimean Medal with clasp for 'Sebastopol; together with the Turkish Crimean Medal. His overseas deployments in order were:- North America: 1 year 4 months- Malta: 5 months- Crimea: 1 year 1 month- East Indies: 8 years 4 monthsAt final discharge John McLeod indicated that he intended to take up his future residence at Stornoway (Isle of Lewis) ScotlandNot all members of the 72nd Highlanders serving in India during the years of the Indian Mutiny were entitled to the Indian Mutiny Medal - which specific qualifying criteria required that a soldier must have served under fire during the Mutiny to qualify. A search of the Indian Mutiny Medal roll's, for this regiment shows that there were at least 3 x men of the rank of Private and having the name John McLeod were serving with the 72nd in India during the Mutiny period, but only one of those qualified and received the Indian Mutiny Medal and clasp 'Central India' viz No 2981, who was the 'third' of the namesakes on the muster rolls of the periodCondition: VF
