The recipient Sye Errapa, was an Indian soldier of the Hindu faith from the Karnataka region of Southern India, who held the rank of Staff Havildar while serving with the Sappers and Miners, the military engineer corps of the Honourable East India Company's Madras ArmyDuring the Indian Mutiny, various companies of the Sappers and Miners of the Madras Army qualified for Indian Mutiny Medals (only awarded to those who came under fire), with and without clasps (those companies qualifying for clasps were entitled to the Lucknow or Central India clasps) depending in which field force they served under. The regimental history, lists a total of 11 x Orders of Merits as having been awarded to Indian personnel of the Sappers & Miners for their respective deeds of gallantry during the suppression of the Indian MutinyAt the time of the Indian Mutiny, the Sappers & Mines of the Madras Army comprised 12 x companies (reduced to 10 x companies in 1862), with each company comprising 142 x 'All-Ranks' and including 120 x Privates, 2 x Native Officers, 6 x European N.C.O.'s, 12 x Native N.C.O's and 2 x BuglersIn 1876 the corps of Madras Sapper and Miners was re-styled as 'Queen's Own' Sappers and Miners'.
