Reference 'British Battles & Medals' (Spink, seventh edition 2006), the recipients unit (described as Bengal Field Artillery - sic) is shown as confirmed as present at both Lucknow and Relief of Lucknow, and entitled to the Indian Mutiny Medal for both those claspsThe recipient Denis Hurly, an Irishman, held the acting appointment of 'Bombardier' while serving with the 3rd Company 5th Battalion Bengal Foot Artillery, of the Bengal Presidency Army of the Honourable East India CompanyThe recipients British Army service papers are extant and accessible at The National Archives (under No 2204 Gunner Dennis Hurley, Royal Artillery - his service papers show that he volunteered to transfer his service to the Royal Regiment of Artillery of the British Army on 19 February 1861)Reference the Depot Registers of Irish Recruit Recruits for the Honourable East India Company 1811-1855 (held and accessible at The British Library, in the collections of the former India Office Library) there was only one soldier of the name 'Denis Hurly' recruited in the period 1811-1855. There were 2 x others called Dennis Hurley & Denis Hurley recruited, however the former of those is recorded to have died in India in 1847, the latter was born in Co. Cork in 1827 (and not 1830)Denis Hurly was a native of the parish of Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland, where he was born c.1830. Denis is recorded to have attested for the H.E.I.C. forces at, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, on 12 November 1850, where he was enlisted by a Major Thompson. At enlistment Denis was described as a Labourer by trade, was 20 years of age, measured 5ft 8inches in height, and was of fresh complexion with brown hair and blue eyes. He joined the H.E.I.C. Depot in England on 25 November 1850. Denis is recorded in the 1851 National Census for England, where he is shown as residing at the H.E.I.C.'s Depot, vis Warley Barracks, near Brentwood, Essex, England. Denis subsequently embarked for sailing to India aboard the 'Kent' on, 14 June 1851. Denis Hurly served 16 Years & 11 months service in India, in the service of firstly the Honourable East India Company's Bengal Presidency Army, and latterly with the British Army. His British Army service papers confirm that he held an Indian Mutiny Medal. Denis took his final discharge from the British Army at Aldershot, Hampshire, England on, 8 February 1870, and showed that his intended future place of residence, was to be his hometown of Thurles, in Co.
