The recipient Nain Singh was an Indian soldier of the Sikh faith serving as a Sepoy (Private) in the Ruby Mines Military Police Battalion, of The Burma Military PoliceThe Ruby Hills Battalion had its origins in 1888, and had its headquarters at Mogok - the capital of the 'Valley Of the Rubies- - and the centre of the gemstone mining and trading in Burma. The unit was in existence as a battalion of the Burma Military Police through to 1914. The native officer and other-ranks were recruited from amongst the military classes from the Punjab of India (Punjabi Mussalmans & Sikhs), Garhwalis from India and Gurkhas from Nepal and the settled Gurkha communities in Assam and Manipur. Until 1909 no other native classes were recruited to the battalion, or any other BMP battalion The range of ethnic classes recruited into the Burma Military Police was however expanded in 1909 to include 'Chins', and latterly Karens.
