Died On-Active-Service in Sudan: Driver Edwards is recorded to have died on active service at 'Atbara', Sudan, on, 13 September 1898The recipients' Sudan Medal was sent to the recipients nominated next of kin, his father, William Edwards, who resided at 84 Tram Road, Side North, Merthyr, WalesMedal(s) & Clasp Verification: Driver Edwards is confirmed entitled to the below following referenced medals and clasp for his service in the Reconquest of the Sudan:- Sudan Medal 1896-98. Silver: WO 100/80. 'Deceased' with remark that medal to be sent to his father in Merthyr- Egypt. Khedives Sudan Medal 1896-1908. Silver with clasp 'Khartoum': Recipients extant service papers referJohn Edwards, son of William Edwards, was a native of Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales, where he was born circa 1873. When he attested for the British Army at Merthyr on, 14 March 1892, he described himself as being 19 years of age, and by 'Trade' had been a 'Labourer'. On enlistment he was posted to the Royal Regiment of Artillery, and sent to Woolwich Depot to carry out his basic training. On 14 March 1893, John embarked for overseas service in Egypt. During his service in Egypt and latterly the reconquest of the Sudan. Driver Edwards served with 32nd Battery Royal Field Artillery. By the time of his death from 'Enteric Fever' at Atbara, Sudan, 13 September 1898, John had served a total of 6 years 184 days with the British Army, of which 5 years 184 days was spent in Egypt and SudanA scarce seen 'Welsh Sudan Casualty', as no Welsh regiments served during the 'Reconquest of the Sudan' campaign, albeit Welsh soldiers, including John Edwards did of course served in theatre with various regiments of the British and Egyptian Army'sThe recipients service papers are extant and accessible at The National Archives where they are held in WO97 file seriesCondition: About EF
