Williams, served with the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, as a member of a helicopter 'Aircrew'During his service in the Malaya Emergency, the recipient is reported to have qualified for the NGSM with clasp while serving with 848 Squadron Fleet Air ArmIn 1952, 848 Squadron - the Royal Navy's first operational Helicopter Squadron - deployed to South East Asia (Malaya) equipped with American-built Westland Whirlwind HAS.21 helicopters. While serving 'land-based' in Malaya & Singapore, 848 Squadron pioneered the troop-carrying helicopter role for the British Army's jungle operations during the Malayn Emergency. During it's deployment in theatre 1952-56, the helicopters of 848 Squadron are estimated to have transported more then 41,000 troops and air-evacuated an estimated 850 x sick/injured casualty evacuationsCondition: Reverse toned about EF
