Thornton-Kemsley, asking him to take the matter-up.'Sandy has never complained to me because he knows I have only my widow's pension,' she said referring to her 18 year-old son, who is six feet six.'I'm not taking it up so much for Sandy, but for all the others. But, I know he'll be taking it bad, too. I needed almost a pan of tatties for him.'Her son has been in Kenya since July. In the last month Mrs. Grewar has sent five parcels to him.'A friend of mine received a letter from her boy who is serving with Sandy, telling her to send a parcel right away, no matter what the price. It costs that boy £2 10s postage - his mother had to take it from his bank account - for a two-pounds, some biscuits and sweets.'Sandy will be 19 on Saturday, and a month ago a big birthday cake was posted to him cake.Unquote.In a word 'brilliant'.......Presumably the towering height of 'Big Sandy' who as his 'mither' wrote had a great appetite for 'spuds & cake' would have singled him out in equal measure to his African enemies as a potential 'trophy' target as well as a 'Jock to Fear'! 1st Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) arrived in, Kenya Colony, on, 1 August 1953, where they replaced the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, in the 39th Infantry Brigade. 1/BW was soon dispersed at various locations around the Rift Valley region; A Coy with battalion HQ at Nyeri; B Coy at Gilgil, with C & D Coy's at Ol Joro Orok near Thompson FallsUncommonly for the Mau Mau Rebellion, the Black Watch has been blessed with a useful 'Other Ranks' memoir published in the past decade, that covers in good detail, the regiments service in Kenya Colony during the Mau Mau Rebellion, see:- 'Letters From The Forest' (Peter Grant, 2017)The medal retaining its original silk riband and mounted as-worn in the swing-style.
